Time is ripe to switch Man Utd's system - Amorim insists.

Man Utd players ahead of a match
Man Utd skipper Bruno Fernandes was one of seven first-team players absent from the holiday period triumph against Newcastle United.

Boss Ruben Amorim argues that switching Manchester United's formation due to media scrutiny would have been "the end" for him.

For the first time against Newcastle United, Amorim ditched his trademark back three formation with wide defenders and instead field an standard back four shielded by two defensive midfielders.

By his own admission this at times functioned as a back six in the closing phase as his side dug in for a victory - securing just their second shutout of the season.

While he once notably said that even the highest authority could pressure him to tweak his system, Amorim insists the option to experiment with different formations has always been part of his strategy.

Nevertheless, he stresses he could solely alter the tactics when his team were faring at an acceptable level - otherwise it would look as if he was giving in to outside criticism.

"At the time I came here last season, I recognized maybe I didn't possess the personnel to play well in a back three, but it was the commencement of a journey," he said.

"We were trying to forge an style. Today is a separate time. We don't have a full complement of personnel, and we have to adapt, so they understand why we are changing.

"This isn't because of the demands of you guys, or the fans.

"When media discuss altering the system all the time, I cannot make a change because the players will think I'm altering things because of you and I think that is the end for the coach.

"Once we are getting results in our system, then is the opportunity to adapt.

"We are going to develop into a stronger side because when our full complement of players return, we are not planning to use three defenders all the time."

Availability Challenges Loom Large

With just two wins in their last eight outings before defeating Newcastle, it is debatable whether Amorim is correct to state his team have been playing well.

He is, though, managing with a depleted squad, with multiple senior players already ruled out for the upcoming fixture against struggling Wolverhampton Wanderers.

That total will rise if playmaker Mason Mount fails to recover the injury that forced his exit from the Newcastle game at half-time.

Captain Bruno Fernandes is among those who will miss the Wolves match, despite the fact he is understood to be pressing his boss to let him to make a comeback after his muscle injury.

"Bruno is already saying he needs to train," revealed Amorim. "However there is no chance he is going to play against Wolves. No chance. You can quote me on that."

The Captain's Role Is Unwavering

However, the Portuguese star will likely still be heavily involved, as whereas most injured players watch matches from a private box, Fernandes was seen monitoring the warm-ups from the entrance of the player's tunnel before the Newcastle game.

Amorim is sure his captain to carry on offering guidance.

"He is a leader," he affirmed. "He cannot be that guy that when he is absent, he's silent and offering advice. He's always communicating. That is the reason he's the skipper.

"He has flaws at times - his mannerisms he moves his arms - but he has a multitude of good things. After he recovers, he heads to watch the other guys practicing. There are a lot of aspects that go unnoticed.

"I don't know if he wants my position or not, but he's a born leader. He is a true captain."

Recovery Timeline for Key Players

Although the exact date for Fernandes' return - and that of other injured stars like Kobbie Mainoo, Matthijs de Ligt, and Harry Maguire - is unclear, by the end of January, United will welcome back Noussair Mazraoui, Amad Diallo, and Bryan Mbeumo from international duty.
